Orange County Coastal Fishing Locations
| Huntington Flats – Located at 33D 39.30′N. x 118D 03.40′W. Offers great year round fishing with artificial reefs including Izor’s Reef and hard bottom and shale areas. Huge schools of sand bass and barracuda during the summer months mean non stop action. Yellowtail, white sea bass, and halibut are some of the larger prized gamefish available. |
| Newport Artificial Reef – Located at 36D 16 13N x 117D 57. 49W this is a small natural reef area that had over 10,000 tons of concrete and pilings deposited in over 8 acres creating a thriving eco system. Both large gamefish and many common gamefish inhabit this area including white sea bass which are available year round along with both calico and sand bass and many more species. Never be shy about fishing a large bait here as it often rewards those that stick with it with trophy gamefish. |
| Corona Del Mar State Beach – Located at Latitude/Longitude: 33.5936 / -117.8742 just south of Newport Harbor entrance. This is the beginning of a series of excellent fishing areas that continue south along the coast on down to Laguna Beach. Very large white sea bass and sheepshead are caught as well as good calico bass fishing. Lots of rocks and reef areas so try to not let the fish get to the bottom or they will break you off in the rocks. |
| Barn Kelp – Off of Camp Pendleton Marine Base at 33D 18.50′N. x 117D 29.10′W this area is very productive for calico bass and sand bass along with barracuda and larger gamefish such as white sea bass and yellowtail. Also know for big black sea bass which must be released if hooked. |
| San Mateo Kelp – Located along the beach town of San Clemente at 33D 22.50′N. x 117D 35.50′W holds all of the usually reef fish. Know for very large halibut and calico bass. About 15 minutes south by boat from Dana Point. |
| Dana Point Headlands Kelp – Surround Dana Point Harbor and continuing north to Salt Creek at 33D 28.45′N. x 117D 44.50′W. Known for big white sea bass and excellent calico bass fishing. Large halibut are often caught just off the kelp line. When targeting white sea bass or yellowtail, kelp cutter rigs or heavy line is recommended as these fish almost always head into the kelp once hooked. |

Popular Gamefish Targeted In Orange County Waters
![]() |
Yellowtail – Maybe the most prized gamefish in southern California waters this hard fighting member of the jack family will not disappoint. Caught year round along the coastal waters. 10-20 pound specimens are common and up to 40 pounds possible. |
![]() |
White Sea Bass – Known for reaching giant sizes of 70 pounds or more 30-40 pounds is more the norm. Barn Kelp and Dana Point Headlands Kelp are some popular locations but numerous areas all along the coast are productive. |
![]() |
Halibut – Often caught in good numbers and large sizes. During the grunion runs in spring and summer is a favorite time to target these gamefish. Light line gets more bites but they do have teeth and if the line gets just right they bite through it or fray it and get away. Hard bottom areas off of Salt Creek and around all of the kelp areas are very productive. |

Sand Bass – These smaller gamefish can make up for their size in their fighting ability. During the spring and summer months these fish spawn creating clouds of bass that will inhale most baits. During their spawn they are found in schools over sandy bottom and can be caught on very light line. San Onofre is known for huge concentrations of sand bass during the summer months. During the fall and winter months 20 pound test or more is needed to get larger specimens from reefs. One of the most commonly caught gamefish. Slow growing so good idea to return the larger ones to ensure healthy breeding stock. |

Barracuda – Aggressive gamefish that attacks lures and baits and can bite through line before you feel the bite. Caught year round but primarily in the spring and summer months. Start off in large concentrated schools and then spread out during the summer months often mixed in with spawning sand bass and found along the edges of kelp lines. |

Rockfish – Covers many species of gamefish usually found in slightly deeper water. Red snapper, ling cod, sheepshead, sculpin, whitefish or just a few all great eating and caught in larger numbers. |
